WSU faculty leader mum on contract prospects

WINONA, Minn., April 5, 2002 -- The president of the Winona State University faculty, David Bratt, doesn't want to predict whether profs will approve a tentative contract negotiated with the state chancellor. Voting will be April 9. Most observers expect the proposed pact will be approved, but Bratt said if he expressed too much confidence then people may not vote. Bratt did say he expects a high turnout.

Budget woes a non-issue for WSU summer jobs

WINONA, Minn., April 1, 2002 -- State budget cuts won't affect Winona State students looking for summer campus jobs, according to the university's summer conference coordinator. Tracy Ferber says the budget for student dorm supervisors, tour guides and assistant conference coordinators is generated from fees and not funded by the state. "This side isn't affected as much as the jobs in academic buildings," said Ferber. "We don't rely as heavily on state money." Ten to 15 students will be hired to work 10 to 40 hours a week, according to Ferber. Twelve conferences are scheduled, including hockey and high school leadership camps. In addition, some students are needed as supervisors in the Sheehan dorm. Interviews for the positions will be April 9 and 10 with decisions by April 12, Ferber said.

Redistricting toll now includes La Crescent legislator

LA CRESCENT, Minn., April 5, 2002 -- Three-term State Rep. Michelle Rifenberg, R-La Crescent, whose district includes extreme southeast Minnesota, has decided against seeking re-election because of new district boundaries. Rifenberg's decision clears the way for Rep. Greg Davids, R-Preston, to run for a seventh term. Davids and Rifenberg found themselves in the same district when the courts redrew legislative district boundaries to reflect population changes. Rifenberg called the redistricting "cruel" and "illogical" but said her decision was "in the best interest of everyone."

WHO'LL BE TEACHING WHAT ?

Expect new profs on WSU history podiums

WINONA, Minn., April 5, 2002 -- Students will see a lot less of Winona State University history prof Norm Sobiesk next year and probably not see prof Alex Yard at all. Sobiesk, who teaches modern Europe, will enter phased retirement and teach only spring semester, said department Alex Yard. Yard himself is going on sabbatical. Searches are under way for someone to cover their courses. Yard's temporary replacement will have to be someone with expertise in both modern East Asia and U.S history. A candidate that will partially replace Sobiesk must have expertise in modern Europe, said Yard. Sobiesk's gradual retirement is a money-saver for the university. After 32 years at Winona State, Sobiesk earns $86,300. Yards earns $49,700l, which will be cut two-thirds to $33,100 during his absence. Ads for replacements have been placed on Humanities Net, a web site, and in a national journal, the Chronicle of Higher Education. Yard expressed confidence that all classes will be covered next fall. "It's not going to be easy, but we'll make it," he said.
