WSU football coach: Team is toughWINONA, Minn., April 7, 2002 -- In preparation for the spring practice, Winona State University football players have been lifting weights four days a week and participating in stretching and stamina-conditioning exercises two days a week. Coach Tom Sawyer said the players are in shape. Although outdoor training was delayed by snow last week, the Warriors are now regularly at Maxwell Field, where the home football games are played. The team is practicing every day that there is no home softball game. The Warriors' spring practice sessions will conclude with the annual spring game. Sawyer said the team will be split into four units consisting of the first-team offense, first-team defense, second-team offense and second-team defense. Each of the offenses and defenses will play against each other for roughly 30 plays. The spring game:Date: April 27

Bar bouncer: Aim at boozers, not bars| Brandleson: "With a 24-hour time span, a minor can contact a fake ID maker, choose a state ID to illegally duplicate, get their picture taken, and pay betwen $150 to $200 to receive the highest quality fake ID available." |

| WINONA, Minn., April 7, 2002 -- The city should crack down on underage boozers, not the bars that get conned by fake IDs into letting them in, said a Winona State Universty senior whe is a downtown bar bouncer. In a Daily News opinion piece, Kevin Brandleson said it defies logic to fine a bar $500 and suspend its license and let the offending minor off with a wrist-slap $100 fine. Brandleson made his point this way: "Who is to blame when a shoplifter walks into your local department store and walks out -- through all the security in place -- with the store's merchandise? Do we punish the store for not having enough security, or do we punish the culprit?" Brandleson said the bars have elaborate mechanisms to catch underage people. But some fake IDs are so good they will get through both electronic and eyeball screening, he said. With 400 to 500 college kids roaming from bar to bar on a weekend night, some inevitably will make it through, he said. |
