What next? WSU up in air over dorm| WINONA, Minn., April 24, 2002 -- Winona State University executives figures the ducks were all lined up for the buillding permit for the proposed Sarnia Street dorm. Wrong. Now that the city Board of Adjustments has voted against the high-density dorm, with 26 percent less space per tenant than city code allows, the university is scrambling to decide what to do next. A request to the Board of Adjustment to reconsider is a possibilty, said Kent Gernander, a lawyer on the WSU Foundation board. It is the Foundation that would build and own the dorm in a novel scheme that spares the university from having to seek state funding. |

Editorialist doubts wisdom of second Huff bike pathWINONA, Minn., April 24, 2002 -- A plan to narrow Huff Street traffic lanes by eight feet on the Lake Winona causeway to create a bike path on the southbound side makes no sense, editorialist John Edstrom of the Post said in an opinion piece. He criticized city planners for going ahead without an opportunity for public reaction. The narrowing should not be a "done deal," Edstrom said. He noted a bike path already exists on the other side of the street. Also, he said, the city once widened the street and took down dozens of mature shade trees to accommodate traffic safely. Huff traffic has increased since then, not decreased, he said. It is Huff that carries most southside and Highway 61 traffic to Winona State University and the core nof the city.
