Forums set with WSU nursing dean hopefulsWINONA, Minn., March 9, 2009 -- On-campus interviews for a new Winona State University nursing dean will begin Wednesday, campus hiring czar Robin Delong said. This schedule for one-hour public forums as released:William McBreen: 10:15 a.m., Wednesday, Purple Room 104, Kryzsko Commons, main Winona campus, and 10:30 a.m., Thursday, CF 202, Rochester campus.
Delong said that biographical sheets on the candidates would be available at the forums. State law requires that finalists be identified publicly in advance, which Delong did Monday but without offering any further information on he candidates. The university administration's new names-only minimalist policy on releasing information on candidates, and doing so less than 48 hours before interviews, has been criticized as inconsistent with the openness in hiring practices envisioned by the law. Specifically, critics say, releasing names only, and doing so at the 11th hour, impedes campus people from preparing adequately for interviews and short-circuits full reviews of the candidates.
University administrators have not explained the new practice, which was implemented quietly this year. Critics say the policy moves away from collegial consensus in hiring and allows administrators, who have full access to candidate files, to act with less than full public oversight.
