KQAL chief: Play-by-play at stake

WINONA, Minn., Feb. 5, 1999 -- Radio station KQAL, which broadcasts from Winona State University, would have to tighten its belt if a proposed state funding cut goes through, said Ajit Daniel, the station's general manager. Staff travel to cover varsity games live on other campuses would be a possible area to cut, Daniel said. About Gov. Jesse Ventura, who proposed the cut, Daniel said: "Jesse thinks and acts like a wrestler."

WINONA, Minn., Feb. 3, 1999 -- New Gov. Jesse Ventura is unlikely to lose popularity for proposing a phase-out of state funding for noncommercial broadcasting, a Winona State University political scientist, Darrell Downs, said. "The governor thus far is crafting positions that serve the middle-class Minnesotans," Downs said. "He is speaking to the constituency that elected him. It is not clear that public radio consumers fall in this category."

    Textbook price patterns elusive

NEW YORK, Feb. 1, 1999 -- The emergence of on-line discount textbook retailers has increased the spread in selling prices, according to a Text and Academic Authors Association random check. In general but not always, the discounts have prices below campus stores. For the claim of VarsityBooks and BigWords that they offer discounts up to 40 percent, the emphasis should be on the "up to." Little pattern could be discerned in the comparative check. Here's data for texts by leading TAA authors:
